After saying goodbye to our friends at Wickham we drove down the private Rio Tinto Access Road.
To gain access to this road Michael had to complete an exam on the internet and was issued a access permit. Craig had told us that there is a ranger on the road that will definately pull us over and check our permit. The kids were on the lookout the whole time but we didn't see him at all.
We had filled up 2 x 20 litre water bottles at Pardoo Station as they had filtered drinking water and had them in the van. We had done this as most of the water you come accross tastes bad and we only use it for washing up and showering. We had stopped on the side of the dirt road to check that the water hadn't fallen over and it had. Michael and I were in the van cleaning it up when a Rio Tinto worker stopped and popped his head into the van to see if we were alright. We told him we had leaking water and he said he saw it all over the road and we thought that's funny, it's only a few litres. Little did we know it was from our van. That night when we arrived at Karijini, the taps on the two water tanks under the van had been smashed off from rocks along the way and we had no water left in the tanks. Lucky we had the 40 litres inside the van.
When we arrived at Karijini we went to Dale's Gorge and did the Fortesue Falls, Circular Pool and the boys had a swim at The Fern Pool. On the way into the Fern Pool we were warned by tourists coming out that people were skinny dipping in the pool. When we arrived a lady was in the pool with her boyfriend taking some interesting photo's of her in the water. Mitch said definately backpackers!!
We headed for the camp ground as it was starting to get dark and it was full so we had to go to the overflow. As we drove in we spotted John, Sue, Tom and Emma a lovely family that we had met on the Gibb River Road at Winjana Gorge. So we parked up next to them and had a great night catching up on all our travel stories.
