26 September 2016 - Day 177 - Glenrowan

Today we only had a three and a half hour drive from Ballarat to Glenrowan, which we were all happy with.  We decided not to drive up the Hume Highway to Glenrowan but to take the more scenic route.  The scenery was beautiful along the way and sometimes we were on dirt roads and didn't see another car for some time.  We drove a short time on the Burke and Wills Track.

We had decided to visit Glenrowan to teach the children about Ned Kelly as this is where Ned was captured.

We stayed at the Glenrowan Tourist and Caravan Park and at $25.00 per night for the family is was by far the cheapest park we had stayed in.  It was a nice park with a small creek running thru the middle of it and as soon as we arrived the boys were playing in the creek.

Our first stop for the day was the Ned Kelly Theatre show which consisted of mechanical statues that told the story of the night that Ned was captured.  It was really interesting and at one point we had to stand in a shed in the dark that was a replica of the old Glenrowan Inn that the police set fire too to flush out the Kelly gang. Gun shots were going off and smoke was coming in thru the windows and  the roof.  The kids got a bit scared as it was really noisy and something in the roof fell and scared the hell out of us.

The theatre also had on display guns and rifles that Ned and his gang used on the night.

We had a quick walk around the town as it only consists of about 8-10 shops and the Glenrowan Hotel before we visited the 8 sights that featured on the night of the siege which included the Railway Station, The Capture Site and the Glenrowan Inn.

Then we drove up to Beechworth which was only 45 minutes away.  We got to walk into the gaol cells that Ned and his mother were held in back in 1881.

The next stop was the Newtown Bridge which was built in 1875 and was considered to be the best bridge in the colonies at the time and is still going strong.

It was back to the caravan park as the kids were keen to get back and have a play in the creek and on the rope swing.

That nigt we had a campfire and met a lovely couple from Melbourne, Bec and Luke and there 3 cute girls.
