4 - 5 July 2016 - Days 93 - 94 - Windjana Gorge Gibb River Road

It was another long day in the car.  We left Broome and dropped the caravan into storage at the caravan park in Derby and posted back some school work at the post office before we headed for The Gibb River Road.

When we started The Gibb River Road we didn't really have any set plans except for that we thought we would stay around 8 nights and hopefully get to Drysdale River Station.  The stories that we had heard about the roads and conditions left me alittle worried as we only had 1 spare tyre.

The start of The Gibb River Road is in good condition with lots of road works being done.  The turn off into Windjana was very corrigated but not too bad.

We arrived at Windjana Gorge and set up the tent and was surprised at how many people were there.  It was the start of the WA school holidays and lots of families from Perth do The Gibb in the holidays.

We walked into the gorge and spotted over 60 freshwater crocodiles.  The water was so still and the reflections of the rocks were amazing.

That night we had a camp fire and listened to another camper play the didgeridoo.  In the middle of the night Cooper got sick and the poor thing vomitted so Michael took him outside to the tap and they were stunned to find a wallaby guarding the tap.  They got around the wallaby and Cooper was all better in the morning.

In the morning we went on the gorge walk and found a bowerbird in it's nest and had a good look around before heading down to Tunnel Creek.

The road to Tunnel Creek was really bad but we survived with no problems.

We really enjoyed Tunnel Creek.  You really need a good torch as it is pitch black in sections and you are walking thru water with Freshwater Crocodiles in it.  We spotted 6 crocs and some people that were walking thru didn't even realise that they were there.

The rock formations on the roof and walls were unreal and halfway thru the tunnel we all lay on the sand and put our torches to the ceiling and enjoyed the view.  We would then turn them off and lay in the dark. It was about 5-10' cooler in the tunnel than outside so it was lovely.  We would then turn our torches on when people got near and scared the hell out of them as they didn't realise that we were there.

We then headed back to Windjana and met a nice family that was setting up camp next to us.  They had just come from Kalumburu and told us how amazing it is.  We then started thinking that maybe we should try and get up there.  It is another 311 kms on bad roads past the Gibb River Road turnoff.

That night we all went down to the gorge as they had also heard that at dusk the crocs jump up out of the water to catch bats that are flying past.  We waited but didn't see any get eaten.  We all back for a camp fire and a few drinks.
