13 Septmeber 2016 - Day 164 - Nullabor

We survived the windy night and nobody came and told us to move.  It was also our first night camping on our own and nothing happened to us!!!

The boys went and hit some golf balls into the ocean from the top of the cliffs before we got back in the car and headed for the Nullabor Roadhouse to get some more petrol.  The weather was terrible and it was pooring with rain.  There were lots of people cycling across the Nullabor that were hanging out waiting for the rain to pass.

Just as we drove to the Head of the Bight and paid to go into the whale viewing area, the rain stopped and the sun was shining.  It was our lucky day and as soon as we walked along the boardwalk you could see at least 20 whales just off the shore.  It was really beautiful seeing the mothers with their calves just swimming around so close to land.

The next stop for the day was Penong where we visited Australia's largest windmill and then the boys played the golf hole behind it called Windmills at 260m.  This was the 3rd and last hole that we played and it was heaps of fun.  The kids had so much fun.

We then turned off the Eyre Highway and drove the 20 kms into Cactus Beach.  We thought we might have stayed there the night but it was raining and very windy.  So Mitch and Michael had a look at the surf while Cooper and I stayed warm in the car.  The car got so dirty from driving in on the sandy roads in the rain.  On the way back to the highway we got stopped by a few hundred sheep being walked up the road.  We stopped and spoke to the Farmer who had his 2 young daughters rounding the sheep up as he drove behind in his 4WD.  He said he had to take the sheep over 3 kms and across the Eyre Highway to the otherside of the town.  We couldn't believe it and would have loved to have stopped and watch him stop the traffic and get all the sheep across the highway, but we couldn't time was ticking.

The next stop was Ceduna.  We had a quick drive around town and a look at the Jetty and then Michael spotted a pizza shop.  So we stopped and had the world's biggest and yummiest pizza for dinner before we continued driving another 60 kms and found a rest stop on the side of the road that had one other van in it.  It was pitch black by the time we arrived and it was raining so we jumped in the van and played UNO.  We had another great night together playing games after another long day of driving over 550 kms.
